Many celebrities are really utilizing denim - they're dressing it up with embroidery, lace, fur, jewelry, accessories. What ever the heart desires. Dark denim, light denim, stone washed denim, colored denim - all good to go this season!

So go crazy with the denim choices available. Dress it up or down. Denim can take you from the office to a night on the town.

The gals can dress it up with pearls, the guys with a tie. Crystal or rhinestone jewelry will make you dazzling! Add some long fun beads, a chunky necklace, or an armful of bangles.

Don't forget to accessorize. Add a hat, a belt, or how about suspenders just for kicks. Add a fitted blazer to that denim skirt, add some heals to your favorite pair of jeans. Try a pair of the ever popular wedge shoes with any of your denim items.

For women with small waists and wider hips Joe's jeans has a new jean line called "Honey Jeans" They are designed so they don't gape at the waist. They accomplish this by making a two part waist band which give them more of a curve.

Low rise jean that truly fits the feminine form. Check them out. They run around $148.00 a pair and can be found online.

Paper Denim has grown in popularity and offers great body fits - Super low rise, low rise, x-low slash pocket, and x-low flare. As well as the trouser and boot cut if your looking for something different.

Marc Jacobs has a form fitting dress that is ever so sexy. Add a light cardigan for those cooler evenings and you'll look sensational.

There are a host of denim designers and manufacturers offering jeans of various cuts, mini skirts, bustle skirts, form fitting dresses, flowing dresses, capri pants, denim shirts, vests, hats, denim belts, denim shoes, the list goes on and on.

If you want to get some great ideas of what you can do with your denim I recommend you visit Misssixty.com Very interesting and informative site!

Quite frankly, denim never goes out of style, but it's acceptance varies. Currently many companies are even allowing it at the work place if it has been dressed up.

Dressing up denim is very easy to do. Add a formal top, some heels, or a nice blazer and you've got a very polished look.

Denim is durable, wearable, comfortable, and now more than ever fashionable. So enjoy your denim and dress it up or down to whatever the occasion.

Celebrating a Special Occasion with Jewelry! How to Buy Jewelry? (Part I)

Nothing more personal than our response to color. Color is the new language of passion, and nothing captures it better than distinctively styled jewelry.

Leave her speechless with our brilliant colorless and fancy colored diamond or bold brilliant gemstone jewelry styles.

Celebrating a Special Occasion with Jewelry!

How to Buy Jewelry? (Part I)

The concept of jewelry implies fashion, ornamentation, and adornments. But jewelry is much more than just that. It reflects your personality and shows what you value in life. It defines your style through colorful stones and gems jewelry.

Colored precious gemstone jewelry is the latest fashion. Colored gemstones are worn in rings, earrings, necklaces, pendants, and bracelets by every one. If you like to own an exceptionally beautiful and exclusive piece of jewelry, you should only consider gemstone jewelry. A piece of colored gemstone jewelry will distinguish you as a class apart from the crowed that wears gems like diamonds. The best way to go around shopping for a special kind of jewelry is to go to the Internet, look at the exquisite designs of colored gemstones or diamonds on white or yellow gold jewelry and select the one that matches your style.

? You are looking at gems and are shown, or viewed one on Internet, an evening Emerald, at a price much lower than what you would expect to pay for an Emerald of the same size. Would you buy the emerald and would you know what you are buying?

? You are admiring a piece of gold jewelry and are told it is 14 Karat gold. Do you know what marking to look for to make sure it is solid 14 Karat gold and not rolled gold, gold electroplate, or gold wash? Do you, in fact, know what 14 Karat and other terms Mean?

? You notice that brooches (or Pins) are the latest fashion in jewelry and are being shown in all fine jewelry stores as well as online jewelry stores. Do you know which you would buy and which might be the better buy, regardless of what you can afford?

? You are cleaning an opal ring, a pair of diamond earrings, and a string of pearls. Do you know the best way to clean them and would clean them together or separately? Also, how would you store them after cleaning?

? You want to buy a diamond ring. Would you look for a fine jewelry store or a fine online jewelry store where the each jewelry piece are clearly marked to show price and quality, a store offering a sale o diamonds, a store where you might be able to bargain for a lower price, or even a store offering of a packet of diamonds at a wholesale price? For that matter, do you know what the four Cs of diamonds are?

These are only a few questions about jewelry that are answered at The Jewelry Hut.

? An evening Emerald, for example, is not an Emerald but any green stone of Emerald color.

? All Karat gold jewelry in the United States and some other countries has to be marked to show its quality, according to law. The term &quot;Karat&quot; refers to the amount of gold used in proportion to another metal or metals.

? Another term for costume jewelry is fashion jewelry, and it can be the better buy for high fashion designs that you may tire of or may go out of fashion in a year or two.

? Certain gems and types of jewelry require special care in cleaning and should not be stored together or in the same way, since may become scratched or lose their luster or color.

? In buying fine jewelry, there are few, if any, bargains: You get what you pay for. Clarity, color, cut, and carat size are the four Cs of diamonds, determining the quality and cost of any diamond.

How to buy jewelry is only the beginning of what you need to know about jewelry.

When you buy a car, you buy the one you like and can afford. The purchase is emotional as much as it is practical, since cars in some way are extensions of ourselves. In addition, you know what you are buying, especially if you buying a well known brand luxury car. There may be features, in other cars that resemble or imitate the best of the best, but the genuine article is usually unmistakable. You know what to look for, what to expect, about what you are going to pay, and even where to go buy the car.

Fine furs have more of a mystique than the average car and they may seem more risky to buy. Yet, with time and patience, you can learn to differentiate among furs and to distinguish fine furs from inferior furs. Granted, you will never have the expertise of the experienced furrier, but you will be able to learn the difference between mink of an inferior quality. In short, you can easily learn what to look for, what to expect, about what you are going to pay, and where is the best place to buy the fur.

Both an expensive fur and a fine car are far more than purchases to keep you warm and provide transportation. They are also luxuries and status symbols. At the same time, the primary reason for the purchase is practical, you buy the car to drive and the fur to wear. You do not consider either an investment that appreciates in value. The criteria are that you like what you buy, that you have a use for it, that you can afford it, although you want to get the most for your money.

Jewelry should be bought the same way, regardless of whether it is fine jewelry of Karat gold, platinum, or silver, has precious gems or not, or whether it is costume jewelry. Even fine jewelry, which is a luxury item and can be as much as a status symbol as a sable coat or a Rolls-Royce although far more permanent and enduring should be bought because you like it, can use it, and can afford it. Jewelry after all, is a form of adornment and decoration.

One criterion you do not want to use for jewelry, any more than you would use it for buying a car or a fur, is whether the jewelry is a good investment or not. Some Jewelers, who are reputable and reliable in other respects, offer jewelry as &quot;an investment.&quot; Fine jewelers. In general, however, prefer to point out that jewelry is not really an investment except in beauty. Jewelry, in fact, is a purchase, just like a fur coat or a car. You should appreciate it, of course, although appreciation in that sense is not the same as the appreciation of increase in value of an investment.

What you should buy in fine jewelry, particularly platinum and karat gold, depends on you, your life style, and your preferences. You may be a woman who does not feel dressed without earrings, in which case you may want gold or diamond earrings that you can wear often with enjoyment. Or you may be a man or woman whose taste runs toward rings. A necklace, pendant or a bracelet could also be indispensable.

In any case, shop around. Look at styles and prices before you buy. Get an idea of what jewelry costs and how that compares to what you have to spend. Once you see an item you like, check its price against the prices of similar items in other jewelry stores or online stores. The major purpose is to give you an idea of value and to help you be satisfied, in all respects, after you have made the purchase.

Look in jewelry stores and the boutiques and the better online jewelry stores that often carry fine jewelry. But do not look for or expect or wait for sales. The finest jewelry stores rarely discount fine jewelry. If a style does not sell, it is more profitable for them to melt down the metal and reset the gems than it is for them to sell at a big discount. In this respect, fine jewelry is like no other luxury purchases, since the components can be reused.

Stores other the finest jewelry stores (or online) may offer jewelry at a discount. It may be a style that has not sold well, or the stores may be willing to make less profit or their overhead may be less. These are legitimate reasons to discount the price of a fine jewelry. If the discount is much over 25%, however, you should ask, &quot;80% or 50% off of what price?&quot; Despite laws prohibiting misleading advertising and the stand of reputable jewelers' associations against it, there are still fraudulent advertising and selling practices going on.

For this reason, you want to read the part two of this article, about &quot; How to buy fine Jewelry?&quot; To understand what are the kinds of jewelry.

Summer Swimsuits ? There is Still Time to Enjoy Them

Our summer season has finally made its way into July, marking what most of us consider to be the halfway point of the season. Soon enough, we will struggle to fit another weekend getaway into what is left of summer before having to dismantle the laid back attitude of the summer sun. Students of all ages will be returning to their campuses, only to recall and share the fond memories with other peers.

There is still time to get the most of the warmth and sun before having to cope with facing the inevitable reality of responsibility. There are some relatively unknown tips that can aid in your quest of the everlasting summer, even for those in regions where piling snow will replace the thick green blades of grass.

Find Close-Out Swimwear with Style

Now is the season to gather up all the latest closeout <a target="_new" href="http://lingerie-4u.biz/bikini.htm">bikini</a> and one-piece swimsuits that are holding back the fall and winter gear from reaching the store shelves. Even top designer swimwear gets discounted in the off season. To make sure that your new suit has the staying power for beaches to come, there are some simple rules to follow when selecting the right suit.

<ul>

<li>Printed Fabrics versus Solids. Prints are trendy, and they tend to go out of style much faster than solid patterns. There are exceptions to the rule, and common sense plays an important role.</li>

<li>Pastels and Neon versus the Basic Eight. Like printed fabrics, funky colors are seasonal. It is best to pick the bikini with the basic eight colors. They are always in style, and you don't risk the obsolescence of your new suit.</li>

<li>Slingshot Bikini? Every year there is a new take on the bikini. Although the cool fads might last a few seasons, they can drop off the radar at any minute. Unless you have inside information from a reliable source, stick to the basics.</li>

<li>Trust A-List Designers. <a target="_new" href="http://lingerie-4u.biz/swimwear.htm">Designer swimwear</a> manufacturers usually have a longevity that can be trusted. Top designers set the stage that others so diligently follow. They are the trend setters, and finding their swimwear at discounted pricing is fabulous, especially if your style will last more than one season.</li>

<li>Go Directly to the Source. By heading right toward the designer, there is no middleman getting in the way. Web sites are easily updated and many of the top designers have online bikini and swimwear galleries to browse. Checking at the closeout specials often allow you first-hand knowledge of the newly discounted swimwear.</li> </ul>

Even as the summer draws to a close, begin thinking about your winter getaway to the tropics. There is much to plan, and being prepared with your swimsuits is priceless. Concentrate on other aspects of your travels knowing that you have paid less for the best swimwear available.

Shop Right, Look Great!

All through history one thing has never changed and that is in any given century, fashion has been of great importance to us. It changes over time and often comes back in style many times over. But why is fashion so important to us? We go to such great lengths to look just right. Lets face it; we are judged by how we look. That may sound shallow but it is true. Just go out anywhere and really start looking at people. Observe your own reaction and thoughts when you see how people dress and carry themselves.

Some people are born lucky with great genes. Others need a little help. In either case we can all enhance our look through clothing, makeup, jewelry and personal hygiene.

Before you shop lets take a look at what you can do to improve your overall look.

1) Look at your hairstyle. Does it really suit you? Is the color right? The right haircut and color can make more of a difference than you may realize. Shop for a good hairdresser.

2) Makeup can change your look from ordinary to amazing, but take note; you'll want to buy products that are natural. Our environment is polluted enough and we don't need to add to it by putting chemical products on our skin that can make us break out.

3) Before you go shopping for clothes, stand in front of a mirror and look at your body. Decide what you like about it and what you don't. What you like about it you'll want to enhance. Don't be shy to promote your best body features. There are things you can do to put less attention on what you don't like such as if your thighs are wider than your shoulders, don't wear tight clothing. You'll only draw attention there. Also don't wear loose fitting tops because it will only give you an overall appearance of being big. It's all about balancing your figure. You've probably observed young girls in the mall with low cut jeans. Some of them pull it off well but when you see belly hanging over it, it's not a good look as that is all you really see. Also wear clothes that are age appropriate. I've seen very young girls and very old women dressed in sexy outfits. It does not come off right and generally meets with a thought of instant disapproval. Also, very important, wear colors that suit you. If you don't know then get a friend to go with you and hold up colors to your face and see what looks best.

4) Shop for accessories such as a purse that compliments your shoes. You can also make quite a statement by doing something simple like pulling your hair back and putting long dangling earrings and no other jewelry.

In short, know before you go. Understand your body and shopping will easier. You will look better. Remember, people are unconsciously judging you by your appearance. It's human nature.

Tips to Clean Silver Jewelry

Sterling silver is easy to care for if you follow a few simple steps, so don't be afraid to cover yourself in silver. You will love the look!

In this article you will find easy ways to keep your sterling silver clean with a minimum amount of time and effort. Sterling silver really is not that difficult to take care of whether it is your precious sterling silver jewelry or fine tableware. Keeping sterling silver tarnish free and sparkling is really pretty easy.

Though this article is mainly about cleaning your sterling silver jewelry, it applies to all sterling silver. All the products mentioned here are products that our silversmith's use and recommend for cleaning sterling silver jewelry. They are available through most reputable jewelers, and directly through W. J. Hagerty and Sons, South Bend, Indiana, but Southwest Affinity does make them available for purchase here for your convenience.

If you wish to purchase any product mentioned here and you don't see it available below, please contact us and we will assist you in locating it.

Liquid silver jewelry is very difficult to clean. You can use a soft cotton cloth or a Sunshine Cloth. Avoid dips. They leave residue deposits between each bead, and make the necklace stiff.

A good alternative is to take dry baking soda (or baking powder), and rub it on the liquid silver beads.

Then pat and brush the dry powder off.

Clip Earrings: A Pierce-Less Sense of Style

Pierced jewelry is all the rage among both the young and old, celebrities and commoners alike. But for various reasons, a person may be against ear piercings. It could be because ear piercings are a bit of a hassle, and then again it could be because body piercings are prohibited to a person because of religion or other constraints. Clip earrings are therefore very convenient and suitable for some people. Not everybody wants to be pierced, but everybody wants to be fashionable and chic.

Clip earrings are seldom uncomfortable, and even if one is not accustomed to wearing them, they are easy to get used to. These jewelry items are clasped onto the earlobe, then worn like regular pierced earrings. The clips are often strong, so they don't blow away with the wind or get knocked into the nearest sewer drain while the wearer is casually walking down the street. They are also very convenient; easy to slip on or off in a pinch.

Various materials are used to make this user-friendly and fashionable item. From inexpensive plastic to costly gemstones, they also come in a great variety of designs from which to choose. Clip earrings are an excellent alternative to costume jewelry -- that is, stuff you're going to wear once, and then again only during the next blue moon. Jewelry to wear onstage, and only at specific productions, is an example of this. This might be especially attractive to people who seldom wear earrings, but are drawn by the thought of wearing earrings during special occasions. There is then no need for ear piercings, when such a stylish accessory is already at hand.

Children may also prefer clip earrings as these accessories are enjoyable to wear and to collect. Clip earrings are good for mixing and matching, for swapping and other fun activities. Even if one's ears are already pierced, clip earrings should still be considered -- they may come with uses and "looks" that will pleasantly surprise any person.

Sterling Silver Jewelry -- Classic Simplicity

Sterling silver jewelry is synonymous with class and style in the world of fashion. Its versatility and flexibility make it a welcome and useful addition to any person's wardrobe. Sterling silver jewelry epitomizes classic simplicity in itself, but as the setting for gemstones or combined with other precious metals, the aesthetic value it lends to the wearer is inestimable.

Pure silver by itself is too soft and would not be practical for jewelry and other ornamental objects. Sterling silver is made when another metal, such as copper, is added to the silver to make it hardy and tough. So while it is not as sturdy as stainless steel, sterling silver jewelry is nonetheless very durable and long-lasting. That is why a wide array of rings, necklaces, bracelets, cuff links, belt buckles, body jewelry and more are made from sterling silver.

All sterling silver jewelry is marked as such, and sometimes the name of the designer or manufacturer is engraved on the piece. It is a highly reflective precious metal whose simple yet elegant look is appreciated by both the young and old, the famous and not-so-famous. Some celebrities adorned with sterling silver jewelry on television or in magazines include actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Kristin Davis, musician Sheryl Crow, and hotel heiress and budding thespian Paris Hilton.

Certain maintenance measures need to be taken to care for sterling silver jewelry. To prevent unsightly tarnishing, it should be washed with water and a mild detergent after it is worn, and since it is softer than some other precious metals, abrasion and shock to the piece should be prevented to avoid scratching or marring its surface. In the event that tarnishing does occur, sterling silver jewelry can be polished to restore it to its former sheen.

Whether your dress of choice be casual jeans, practical office attire or a slinky, little black dress for a night out on the town, sterling silver jewelry is the perfect accessory. It adapts easily to all fashion trends without sacrificing the wearer's personal sense of style. Its allure remains undiminished as it continues to evoke the idea of simple luxury.

Fashion Trends for Fall 2005

The overall theme of fashion for Fall 2005 is an air of drama. Black is back, coats are dramatic, and smart tailoring is going to be huge.

Black is back in a big way ? well for most of us it never went away. The stores will be filled with delicious eveningwear particularly black lace, which is sexier than ever whether it's girlie, 80's retro, boho or red carpet elegant. This also works well with the next big trend which is Victorian. Full length skirts, high-necked ruffled blouses and puffed sleeves are the main features of this look. You can go for either prim or sexy. Accessorise with boots, hats and gloves for a total look.

Dresses are soft and feminine for Fall 2005. Velvet in sumptuous autumnal or jewel colours, while more boho-styled graphic prints will also be around for those of you who loved your hippy chic this summer and don't want to give it up just yet.

Coats for this winter will be big and dramatic with big collars, possibly in fake fur. The big story however is going to be Houndstooth checks, the bigger and bolder the better. In fact checks are big in all types of clothes this fall, including plaids and tartans which appear on everything from trousers and skirts to bags, shoes and hats.

Tailoring is back as one of the strongest features of Fall 2005 ? in particular the pencil skirt which appears as part of a skirt suit. Skirts of all types are hot for Fall, straight, wide and swirly, and for the slimmest of figures only the 'bubble', a tulip shaped skirt which will exaggerate hips, so wear with caution!

National costumes have inspired lots of heavily decorated ethnic styles, in particular Russian styles, thick with embroidery and texture and topped off with a furry Russian-style hat, warm enough for the depths of a Moscow winter. Peru has also provided inspiration for embroidered clothes and bright knits.

There are many gorgeous accessories around this season to complete your outfit. Knee high boots, ideally with laced up details to go with the Victorian and ethnic looks, and platforms are making a comeback, usually with a narrow heel. If you prefer flats there will be lots of ballet pump styles. Metallics in shoes, bags and belts will also be popular. For daytime, bags can be as big as you like, either slouchy hobo styles or classic square types. For evening, bags should be tiny and decorated with tassels, jewels or embroidery.

The detail of the season will be pom-poms on everything from scarves to shoes, and the hottest color for accessories will be purple, preferably with studs.

Dolphin or Not a Dolphin?

Dolphin or not a dolphin? That is the question! You see, there are several types of dolphins. Some are saltwater dolphins while others are river dolphins.

When people are asking the question: &quot; What are the 32 types of dolphins?&quot; they are actually referring to the saltwater dolphins that have their natural habitat located in oceans and seas. The river dolphins, which are living in fresh water, are not included in these species. But what would be the answer in this case if we ask: &quot;Dolphin or not a dolphin?&quot; The answer would obviously be yes, river dolphins are still belonging to the dolphins family.

Amongst the 32 types of dolphins, some do not actually wear the word &quot;dolphin&quot; in their name such as: the tucuxi while others actually have the word &quot;whale&quot; as part of their name even if they are not whales but in fact, belong to the dolphins family. Such dolphins species are: the Northern Right whale, the Southern Right whale, the Melon-Headed whale, the Pygmy killer whale, the Long-Finned Pilot whale, the Short-Finned Pilot whale, the False killer whale and finally, the Killer whale. So what would be the answer to the question: &quot;Dolphin or not a dolphin?&quot; in these cases? It would be yes, all these species do belong to the dolphins family.

Another question that people ask is: &quot; Are the marine mammals that perform in acrobatic shows at aquariums such as Marineland and Sea World all dolphins?&quot; So, it always seems to come back to the question: &quot;Dolphin or not a dolphin?&quot; Well the answer is no in this case. The marine mammals that perform there are not all dolphins. Some are dolphins like the Bottlenose dolphin and the Killer whale which is often referred to as an orca whale since the word &quot;orca&quot; is part of this dolphin specie scientific name &quot;Orchinus orca&quot;. The beluga which people tend to think belong to the dolphins family because they display what seems like a smile, like most dolphins, but they are in fact a specie of the whale's family.

Another question that people tend to ask is: &quot;Aren't dolphins and porpoises in the same marine mammal family?&quot; or in other words: &quot;Dolphin or not a dolphin?&quot; Although they both have similarities, they are also different in several ways. You see, the differences are mainly regarding size and shape. The porpoise is smaller than a dolphin, stocky with small or no dorsal fins have a rounded snout and their teeth are shaped like spades or chisels. The dolphin is bigger, has a sleek figure, large dorsal fins, a pointy beaked nose and cone-shaped teeth. As you can see, the porpoise is not a dolphin.

Now that you read these facts about dolphins, you probably realize that while certain marine mammals may appear to be part of the dolphins species and that others seem to be part of the whale's family but in either cases, it is not obvious and can be surprising when you identify a marine mammal as being a dolphin or not a dolphin. That is the question!

Panda Jewelry: an Eye on Our Endangered Wildlife

Thinking of an adorable motif to wear or give away to friends, but tired of cliches? Maybe you've bought too many ballerina figurines or puppy plushies. It's time to experiment with a different theme. The idea of panda jewelry is a unusual and is associated with environmental and ecological issues.

If you want to distinguish yourself from the boring routine of giving away cute cuddly teddy bears or bear-motifed cards for Christmas or a birthday, opt for something different by considering panda jewelry. After all, bears are always cute -- but pandas are exotic BESIDES being cute.

Pandas in accessories may be somewhat unconventional, but the unconventionality itself is sure to make this theme set a smash hit. The white-and-black theme that comes naturally to pandas is useful for every design. We all know how chic chiaroscuro (an italian term for an artistic rendering using only black and white) is "in" at any fashion era!

Besides, it's really wrong to say that pandas aren't "in" at all! Japan's Tare-panda has achieved much mileage among young people since its creation in 1995. In 1999, Japan's Seda magazine elected Tare-panda as the most popular toy of the year. The Tare-panda mascot, bug-eyed and cute, has found its way to various forms of merchandise -- on bracelets and bags, t-shirts and notebooks, and even to cell phone charms!

Mobile phone charms are actually just among of the many examples of accessories where the panda jewelry motif would definitely "click." Kids nowadays may be modern, but modern accessories need not adopt to a futuristic theme, or a fantastic one...in fact, panda jewelry may actually be useful in making young people more aware of the plight of the panda -- specifically the Giant Panda, which is one of the more endangered species in the world today.

Cute and cuddly as they are, pandas are nonetheless beleaguered by very real issues. Encouraging more young people into wearing panda jewelry instead of regular bear jewelry may just help them become more involved in this cause.

I was flipping through this months Elle. There's some terrific style information in it! Looks like we've made it full circle to the 1970s. For some of us we'll get to relive some of our favourite fashions but there may be some 'yuck' in the group too.

Flirty cuts in pretty colors with ruffles and frills are in. Remember the vibrant balloon tops - they are back. As are the wool wrap tops and wool jackets. Super high heels have also made their way back into the picture. Your jewelry selections are wide open for mixing and matching. Big and bold will certainly fit the current trends.

Elle says that these items are runway hits: croppped sweaters in acrylic, cotton, or wool. Satin wrap tops ranging from long sleeves to no sleeves, and asymmetrical skirts.

The skirts are definately fun and sexy - black is the hotest color, sequens are very popular, and beaded silk is definately in. Add some sexy earrings or a sparkly necklace and your ready for a night on the town.

Straight leg wool pants are also in, as well as wool jackets with faux fur collars. Chiffon and satin are big and sleeveless cotton knit turtlenecks are ever so in style.

Accessories are bright and bold - hot pink clutches, chintz hand bags, satin and metalic pumps, ballerina flats. Your jewelry can be a mix of bright and bold, and more muted tones. With this years fashions almost anything goes.

Rabbit Jewelry: A Sign of Refinement

There is a certain delight that comes with the sight of rabbit jewelry. The motif is cute and cuddly, and the person wearing it may often be seen as fun to be with, whimsical and affectionate.

In this day and age, a person wearing rabbit jewelry was likely born in the year of the Rabbit, according to Chinese mythology. Actually, on the subject of the Chinese calendar, when we get down to technicalities, there is no Year of the Cat: legend has it that when the Lord Buddha was summoning the animals of the 12 major branches of the zodiac so he could give them unique talents, the Cat was unable to attend. Due to mix-ups over the centuries, some people born in the year of the Rabbit believe they were born on the year of the Cat.

People born in the year of the Rabbit ?- and by extension, those who wear rabbit jewelry -- are smart, articulate, talented, virtuous, tactful, and often sophisticated. They may often not settle for second best, but they are resourceful enough to whip up the "best" in case nothing in their environment readily provides it. They are clever in doing business and conscientious at work. However, they are mostly conventional, stay-at-home types, rarely adventurous and somewhat picky. Rabbits go well with other introspective stay-at-home types, like the sheep/goat, the pig, or the dog.

Rabbits are also popular pets in the United States. As rabbits are often kept in cages until such time as they are required for cuddling and fussing over, they are very easy to maintain. Also, they are very easy to breed, so if you know how to take proper care of your pets, you'll have dozens of little furry balls of joy in no time!

Of course, it's possible that a person who wears rabbit jewelry may also just really like rabbits. Whatever the case, wearing rabbit jewelry accentuates in a person the talents of the Chinese rabbit: resourceful, sensual, crafty, and loving.

Copper Jewelry in Action!

Copper Jewelry is very nice-looking, but also it's a very healthy jewelry. Do you know much about how much copper is needed to our bodies? It's a highly important element for balancing other elements in our body. It keeps our blood vessels elastic. It is really important for bone formation and healing, skin formation and repair. <br /> <br /> Copper Jewelry is very good to wear with autumn-colored clothes. Yellow, beige colors are signs of soon to come winter, which always brings spring after it. Try also wearing copper beads with black t-shirt or any other dark top. <br /> <br /> Since the dawn of civilization people used copper because of its unusual strengths. Wise people engraved prayers on copper stones or copper plates to deliver a strong message to other worlds. Is it believed that copper stimulates energy flow to itself, so when copper jewellry is on body ? it helps to accumulate more energy. It also seem to help with avoiding lethargic tendencies and as a result of wearing it you may feel re-vitalized and stronger. It helps you to concentrate your thoughts. <br /> <br /> As you might have already read ? copper is absorbed through skin and has pain-relief effect, that's why copper bracelets are so popular. It's not an urban legend ? this has medical background and some proofs from Eastern countries, where people know many things from past. Knowledge slowly fades away in nowadays if it has no big commercial value, but Eastern countries cherish comprehensive historical facts. So in a talk with a lady from East ? there was a confirmation that copper jewellery has strong effect on people suffering with arthritis. Copper (especially magnetic jewelry) is known to increase blood circulation and reduce pain in muscles. Many people suffering with arthritis will not leave home without a bracelet. <br /> <br /> Besides copper bracelets you can find some copper beads, strings, and earrings. Most of them are amazingly beautiful and not expensive, since copper isn't a precious metal. Despite it's dollar value ? it's very precious to our health. <br /> <br /> Wearing copper jewelery you might notice green stains on your skin under the place of contact with copper. Don't panic. It's all right, it will come off in a day or two ? it's just copper entering your body. It usually happens in warm days. If you want to avoid it ? paint inside of a bracelet with a transparent nail polish, but as you might figure out ? it prevents health benefits of copper too. These stains aren't known to do any harm for you. There are recommendations to wear copper jewelry while you are sleeping, which is time for our body to rest and to restore, that way you can wash it's traces in morning. <br /> <br /> Copperjewelry, like many other metals is known to tarnish over time. To clean jewelery, made from copper ? just put it in a small solution of lemon or limejuice with a dash of salt, it will shine as new. Alternatively you can keep it in copper jewelry box, preventing from continuous air exposure, which causes copper jewelry to tarnish. <br /> <br /> If you are still not convinced that copper bracelets are a great way to help your health ? well ? go to the nearest pharmacy and continue to buy pills helping pharmaceutical industry to grow and sell you even more. <br /> <br /> After all ? it's not always about how it works ? sometimes it's about how it looks ? and copper jewelry is sometimes amazingly beautiful. Try to find some and you'll be amazed too!

The History of Costume Jewelry

There is virtually no difference between costume jewelry and antique jewelry. Costume Jewelry dates back to the 1930s. By the definition of antique that would also make it antique jewelry. However, most jewelry experts have come to agree that antique jewelry predates the 1930s.

Costume Jewelry came into being in the 1930s as a cheap disposable jewelry meant to be worn with a specific outfit, but not meant to be handed down through generations. It was intended to be fashionable for a short period of time, out date itself, and then be repurchased to fit with a new outfit purchase, or with a new fashion style. It became available in large quantities during the 30s.

Cheap jewelry also existed prior to the 1930s. Paste or glass jewelry as far back as the 1700s. The rich had their fine jewelry duplicated for a variety of reasons, using paste or glass stones. By the mid 1800s with the growth of the middle class there were now different levels of jewelry being manufactured using fine, semi-precious and base materials. Fine jewelry of gold, diamonds, fine gems such as emeralds and saphires continued to be made. Jewelry from rolled gold, which is a thin layer of gold attached to a base metal, entered the market for the middle class. This jewelry was often set with semi-precious gems such as amethyst, coral or pearls, and was much more affordable. And then there was jewelry that most anyone could afford, consisting of glass stones and base metals made to look like gold. All three types were intended to be passed down to future generations.

There are usually clues that can help one identify what era a piece of jewelry is from. Style, material, the type of piece. For example dress clips came in in the 1930s and were out of style by the 1950s. Jewelry reflects styles, designs, colors and stones of the era. For example from 1910 to 1930 silver was the favorite color for metal, so jewelry was found in platinum, white gold, silver or a base metal colored to look like silver. By World War II, gold was popular again but in short supply, since it was vital to the war effort. What gold was available was made into very thin sheets and usually bonded to silver (called vermeil) before being turned into jewelry. By the 1930s rhinestones popularity was ever increasing in Europe. It was not available to the Americans until the 1940s. As a result, many of the pieces from this period tend to feature lots of metal and a single stone or a small cluster of tiny rhinestones.

Today is certainly not much different from past times. We still have fine jewelry, semi precious jewelry, and of course costume jewelry available to us. Costume jewelry can add the finishing touch and show your fashion sense. Costume Jewelry styles of past years are now becoming very fashionable and many are being reproduced. Even with costume jewelry there is a difference in quality. Many of the new pieces do not have the vibrance in the stones or the weight of the older pieces.

Antique and vintage costume jewelry are both fun to collect and fun to wear. No longer is costume jewelry simply "collectable." It is "in style, and" "fashionable," and a terrific conversation starter. Dress to impress!

An Introduction to Lapel Pins

Lapel pins are not just jewelry; they are a way to show off a wearer's passion, affiliation, hobby or travels. Many people collect and trade lapel pins with a fervor usually reserved for rookie baseball cards. Speaking of baseball, the New York Yankees sells more lapel pins than any other baseball team! Each Olympics typically has a signature pin, and you can get your commemorative lapel pin at Disneyland, the Bronx Zoo or from the New Mexico bureau of tourism. Any interest one might have can literally be worn on your sleeve (or lapel).

Lapel pins gained popularity during mid-century, as people wore pins to show their support for Presidential candidates. One such rare pin showing Abraham Lincoln has been valued for more than $650. At that time, lapel pins that were shipped all over the country were often the first time that people saw what Abraham Lincoln looked like. These political lapel pins evolved into the campaign buttons familiar today.

More than wearable art or political declarations, lapel pins can have very personal significance. When shopping at the local department store, you might notice the employee with the &quot;diamond&quot; star lapel pin, indicating their outstanding level of service to the business. The market to create custom pins for businesses and service clubs is quite large, with hundreds of manufacturers to choose from. Lapel pins are often badges of honor ? given to excellent performers, service people and teachers. After 9/11 many Americans wore lapel pins depicting the World Trade Center. Lapel pins are a way of communicating to the world what is important to the wearer. Today, the sale of American flag pins has skyrocketed, reflecting the nation's desire to show their patriotism and support.

Collecting and trading lapel pins is not only an American pastime, as many countries have websites and forums dedicated to the trade of these little metal pins. The Olympics always provides a forum for pin collectors to meet and trade, but with the popularity of the internet you can be sure to find an international collector right from the comfort of your own home.

A Country Boys View on Fashion

I still can't understand it. After all these years, I can't make a lick of sense out of what folks consider to be in or out of fashion ? appropriate or inappropriate attire or appearance. What was &quot;in&quot; last year, might be &quot;out&quot; this year ? or it might be in but you need to change what you wear with it. What was OK for spring and summer probably won't work well for fall and winter - weather considerations aside. And what is in was likely already in somewhere around 20 or so years ago but then it went out so something else could be in. And why don't they just come right out and say FAKE fur instead of trying to dress it up with a fancy foreign word?

Thank God for jeans?

I gotta find the Fashion Holy Book. I know there has to be one out there somewhere that says that it's a sin to wear the same thing as you wore last year. Or maybe it's just sometimes that it's a sin. I dunno. All I know is that the ladies section has to be really big. Like maybe everything but the last seven pages. Guys don't seem to matter quite as much. It's sort of like an afterthought thing just so we wouldn't be offended. They ? whoever &quot;they&quot; is ? could have left us out completely for all I care.

Thank God for jeans?

I can't understand it. Why sometimes looking &quot;layered&quot; is good and sometimes it isn't. Why sometimes croc (apparently &quot;they&quot; couldn't spell the entire word) is good and sometimes it isn't. Why big old-looking broaches are sometimes good and sometimes they aren't. And why anyone would ever frown on micro-mini's is beyond me. OK, so I'm I guy. I'll let that one go.

Thank God for jeans?

And how can pleats be in or out? What about tweed? Is it good or not? Why do ladies handbags need to match their shoes? Can summer shoes be the same as winter shoes? Probably not, huh? And what's wrong with tie dye for cryin' out loud? Looks cool to me. And what's the deal with buying jeans ? brand new, mind you - that look like they've already been worn for two years? I never have been able to figure out that one.

But yeah, thank God for jeans?

I can't understand it. Are guys dress jackets now supposed to have two, three or four buttons? Are pleated dress pants in or out? What about casual slacks? Cuffs ? yes or no? Tuck or don't tuck? Why can't neckties be any width we dang well want? And why do we even wear the silly things in the first place? Why is it important for all the men to look like penguins when they dress for formal occasions? A zebra look makes just as much sense to me.

Thank God for jeans?

And have you looked at underwear lately? (Do I need to rephrase that?) Now I understand that the ladies like to do all sorts of push up, push out, accent, emphasize, enhancement stuff. But guys ? we're getting out of control! Holy smokes. I thought the intent of our under-layer was to keep our goodies in place and prevent excessive scuffing against whatever outer-layer we happened to be wearing. I've even seen articles describing what kinds of underwear the celebrities are wearing. Why would we care? I'm just not understanding any of this.

Thank God for jeans ? and good old briefs?

I guess I never will comprehend any of this fashion &quot;in style&quot; stuff. Seems to me that if we're clean and comfortable ? including warm, cool or dry depending on the weather ? we're good to go. I just can't see that anything else matters much. Of course, I'm just an old country boy. What do I know?

Ankle Bracelets: Accessories to Pamper and Adorn Your Feet

Feet are among the most the most beautiful parts of a woman's body. This fact is often overshadowed by modern media, which highlights women's faces and torsos, and little else. Yet throughout history, the delicate shape of women's feet have been paid great respect and attention, as proven by classical literary works by D.H. Lawrence and Lord Byron, to name only a few. In "Double Indemnity," the hero Walter is so entranced by the ankle bracelet worn by a woman named Phyllis, that he mentions it several times in the course of the movie.

In ancient China, it was such a big deal that women had small, delicate "moon-shaped" feet (that is, with deep insteps) that an entire custom dedicated to foot-binding was developed. This was extremely painful for the women, but the standards for lovely feet back then helped greatly in setting standards of overall attractiveness; women with small feet were considered noble and aristocratic.

Nowadays we have done away with painful practices, knowing that women's feet are beautiful naturally. The sensuous instep and curve of the ankles call for accentuating jewelry. This is part of why ankle bracelets are increasingly in demand.

Ankle bracelets -- "anklets," for short -- are lightweight and fancy decorations for the feet. Many come with tiny charms, which usually include variants of a favorite symbol, like cats, hearts, stars, and bells -- the variety is endless. Bracelets worn on the feet are in fact very similar in make to bracelets worn on the wrists, which is why for many, bracelets and anklets are interchangeable.

For the most part, ankle bracelets are casual accessories: they are best worn on an ordinary day out having fun. Multicolored anklets woven from fibers or threads look great with casual sandals or flip-flops. However, ankle bracelets made of fine-spun gold and silver make a beautiful tandem with fashion shoes, and look great for formal events.

Womens Fashion Ponchos Get Sexy This Summer

Ponchos have come down from the high plains and back into high fashion on to the catwalks this season.

Women's fashion ponchos featured strongly on the catwalks this season.

Gone are the heavy, horse-blanket style ponchos of yesteryear, replaced by delicate fabrics and sexy styles that complement every body. Fashion ponchos hide a multitude of sins.

Whether you choose silky, sheer and sexy, or embroidered ethnic style, the poncho can be adapted for all sizes and all occasions.

Your fashion poncho can be thrown over a pair of jeans for a chic, casual look, or dress it up with a glittery brooch over your favorite little black dress for night time style.

The hot fashion trend straight from the catwalk was the shabby-chic boho-style fashion poncho, ornamented with embroidery, beads and sparkles. Or the casually elegant cashmere poncho, perfect with your favorite jeans.

Ponchos also come short and long this season. The chic little shrug-style poncho clasped or tied on the shoulder in soft knits and delicate lace was featured by many European designers for spring/summer. Also featured were longer, asymmetrical fashion ponchos in a rainbow-bright display of colors and patterns.

Whatever your look for this summer, there is a women's fashion poncho to suit.

Fashion Tips: 5 Ways To Look Fabulous in White

Do you see white in your future? No, I'm not referring to a wedding but rather your summer wardrobe. Nothing spells summer like white. While the temperature rises you can stay cool and look fantastic in white. White will add impact to your summer wardrobe and will keep you looking fresh and inviting. To get the most from wearing white I have a few suggestions.

1. White reflects light so wherever you wear it you will bring attention. Having said that, if you have any body parts you don't want to appear larger don't accentuate that area by adorning it in white and wearing a dark color next to it. What you can do is wear white from head- to- toe so no particular area has focus. For example, if you have large hips don't wear white bottoms with a dark top because the eye will be drawn to the bottom. Instead, wear a white top and white pants and use accessories to take the focus away from the problem area. Or wear white on top and black on the bottom.

2. Wear black and white combinations with accessories to create impact. Wear a white skirt with a black top, black shoes, white handbag, and a black/white necklace. Handbags and scarves that have a black and white pattern will also bring some pizzazz. Experiment.

3. To change your look, wear white with bright colors such as pink and green. Again, choose accessories that will add interest. A pink or green bag, pink jewelry, pink shoes etc. You can also try 3 color combinations such as pink/black/white green/black/white or red/black/white.

4. Wear white only until the end of the summer season and don't wear white to a wedding unless you are the bride.

5. Wear white T-shirts with jeans and choose a finer fabric to wear with suits for a more professional look. When you wear whites pay attention to your undergarments ? avoid lacy bras ? choose to wear nudes, they will not show under white.

Looking Fab at The Beach!

It's that time of year when we pack up our bags and head to the beach for the day to enjoy those warm sunrays and the refreshing sound of the lapping water.

So what constitutes a good beach wardrobe. Well there are certain essentials that none of us forget. On goes the swimsuit and bathing suit cover, flip flops on our feet. Beach bag has been packed with the essentials ? sunglasses, floppy hat, towel and a good book. Great ? got the basics covered but what about the rest.

So if we are so prepared for a day at the beach, why is it by the time we get home we look pretty worn. Here are some helpful tips to make your day at the beach fun and keep you looking fashion fresh all day and all the way home.

First before you leave home, if you've got long hair pull it into a high pony tail or fun knot. Use some funky hair accessories that will stay in place when you're swimming. Try a fun colored bobble or some firm fastening clips in bright summer colors. If you pull your hair up your neck will stay cool and you'll look fresh all day with your neat hairdo.

Second slather yourself in sunscreen before leaving the house, then toss the sunscreen in your bag so you can reapply after a swim or every few hours. A sunburn is not only unhealthy and painful, it's unattractive, so don't let yourself turn into the lobster of the day. Your sunscreen should be a SPF of 15. It doesn't hurt to use a strong SPF on your face or your entire body if you burn easily.

Your beach bag should be large enough to hold your supplies for the day. Why not get something fun and fashionable to keep you looking fashion fresh. Make sure you've got all the daily essentials in your bag ? sunglasses, sunscreen, a good book, a floppy hat, some lip gloss, and any other makeup touch ups you'll want. If you plan to wear eye makeup make sure it's waterproof. Stay away from heavy foundations. If you must apply something use a bronzer moisturizer. It's also a good idea to bring lip balm with an SPF15 to protect your lips. It never hurts to put some moisturizer in the bag. Include a snack and plenty of fluids. It's important not to get dehydrated.

Okay great we've got the basics covered now what about the wardrobe basics? If you're planning to wear a swimsuit it's usually easiest to put it on at home, that way you're not chasing down change rooms. So great ? first on goes the swimsuit. Now what to wear for a cover? Well you've got plenty of choices. A tank top and shorts, tank and skort, or a nice light cotton dress all work well over top. Choose something that's easy to put on and take off, and choose fabrics that breathe to keep you cool. I also suggest including a long sleeved cotton blouse just incase you start to burn you can protect your shoulders and arms.

If you're planning on heading out later in the day without returning home you might want to toss a pair of jeans or long skirt into your bag. If your outing is going to extend into the evening you'll want to include a sweater for the cooler evening air. If you're worried about your evening wear getting sandy or wet at the beach, then place them in a separate bag and leave them in the trunk of your car. That way you are guaranteed they'll remain fresh.

My favorite beach look is this. And what's perfect is it keeps me looking fashion fresh throughout the day and takes me right into the evening. First I like a swimsuit that's got lots of support and is bright and cheerful. I throw a fitted tank on top and throw on a loose flouncy long skirt. The long skirt serves me through the evening and also works great to cover up if I'm starting to burn. I choose a lightweight material in a darker color with a pattern that accents the colors in my swimsuit. Flip flops are my footwear. Depending on where I'm heading after the beach I choose either a basic pair or one of my funky pair with rhinestones or crystals. Easy to walk in, feet breath, and terrific for an evening out. I keep a fitted light weight sweater in my car, and take a long sleeved cotton blouse down to the beach. I usually choose a long sleeved and long length blouse because it's versatile. I can knot it to create a short blouse, wear it long as a beach cover, and put it on if I start to burn on my upper body. I usually choose white or a soft pastel depending on my other colors. I like white because it's cool to wear and refreshing to look at. Every year I buy a fun new beach tote that's big enough for the beach but not too big as to take it with me for an evening out. I like a fun bag that's full of character.

Since I always feel naked without my jewelry I wear fashion jewelry to the beach. That way should I loose something I won't be out a lot of money and I won't feel so bad. I like to keep the earrings simple and elegant. I may or may not wear a necklace. Often I'll toss a funky wood necklace in the bag to add to the evening outfit. I like to wear a couple of fashion rings just to add the finishing touches. Now if you're fussy about tan lines you'll probably want to forgo the rings. I toss my watch in the bottom of my bag so I can put it on later.

That's it ? simple is the key. Keep your beach wardrobe choices simple but fashionable. Think ahead so you can go from beach to an evening out without hassle. Remember to always make your fashion statement!

Have a Cause? Wear a Rubber Wristband!

They are the hottest wearable right now, despite the fashion gurus adding the adjective 'once trendy' while referring to them. Yes we're talking about rubber wristbands. You can't escape them anymore. Be it evacuees at Gaza or NBA football stars, all are wearing these bands. Passing fad? Don't know, but they are still selling like hot cakes.

If you have just stepped out of a time machine and can't distinguish a rubber wristband from a tennis wristband, read this: Rubber wristbands were popularised by famous cycling champion Lance Armstrong who fought and survived multiple cancers. Armstrong wore a signature yellow rubber wristband during his record sixth straight victory at the Tour de France in July.

Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer that had spread to his lungs and brain when he was 25. He won the 1999 Tour de France and has won it six years in a row. The 'Livestrong' rubber wristbands from the Lance Armstrong Foundation are a means to show support for those battling cancer. The sales of these wristbands shot up when Oprah Winfrey encouraged her viewers to order a bracelet when she had Armstrong as a guest on her show.

The Live Strong rubber wristbands sell for $1 a piece. And they are still selling at the rate of 200,000 per day. The funds raised through selling them will support the Lance Armstrong Foundation's efforts to help young people with cancer and their family members to live strong.

Today there are rubber wristbands of all colors available -- blue, pink, yellow, striped... The blue rubber wristband was launched by BBC Radio One, and has the words 'Beat Bullying' stamped on it. This wristband is highly popular among footballers. One of the most popular rubber wristbands around is the 'Support our troops' wristband worn by family members of American servicemen. They come in many colors. The pink ones are about breast cancer awareness.

These wristbands are made of either silicon or rubber. There are also paper and leather wristbands, and ornamental bracelets.

Wearing a wristband is a good way of announcing your support for any worthy cause. What's more, you can have your own custom message stamped on it. The beauty of rubber wristbands is that they can be worn in any situation.

So what does the continuing popularity of the rubber wristbands imply? That they are more than just an accessory. They are about attitude, a reminder about one of the numerous worthy causes that drive the human civilization forward. They are about the human need to show solidarity to those fighting against mighty odds.

Yes, rubber wristbands are a civilizational need in these turbulent times. Let the fashion gurus call them a passing fad, or whatever they like. But these rubber wristbands are here to stay.

If you have a worthy cause to support, show it by wearing a rubber wristband.

Celebrity Fashions For The Average Woman

It's never ending Jessica Simpson totes a Vuitton bag, Courtney Cox is seen in Instyle wearing a beautiful Prada dress, Hilary Swank heads down the runway wearing Calvin Klein. If that's not enough Paris Hilton arrives on the scene with Chanel sunglasses while Jennifer Lopez is seen with Fendi.

Whether it's Versace, Chanel, Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, Calvin Klein, Prada or Fendi, how the heck is the average woman going to be able to stay in style like the stars.

Let's face it. Although we dream about owning that beautiful Vuitton handbag or that Prada dress. For most of us that's about as far as it goes. Most of these items start in the mid hundreds of dollars and easily climb to a value of over $5000, for just one piece.

For the stars there is no worry about saving to buy those designer items. For them price is no object as they freely dole it out for what ever their heart desires.

But it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out most of us will never own these items. So what do we do? Well that's easy.

You and I buy items that look a lot like the designer items. Many call these knock offs and that they are but please realize there are licensed copies and then there are copies that infringe on copyrights.

We do not condone any company that infringes on copyrights. We do however encourage you to shop for items that made similar to the items we see the stars wearing. It's the only way we an look like a million bucks on our shoe string budgets.

As you flip through this months Vogue or Instyle you are going to see some wonderful fashions that you are just going to have to have for the fall. Don't worry within the next few weeks similar styles will be arriving at a boutique or Walmart near year. You can look as good as the stars for a fraction of the cost.

After all are your friends of co-workers going to notice your purse isn't quite the same shape or fabric. Are they going to notice that the dress has a slightly different cut neck or length. I think not. You'll be close enough for most to think you've suddenly got designer taste.

So what are you waiting for? It's going to be a hot fashion season and you are going to be a fashion goddess this season with some savvy shopping.

Beyond Gold and Platinum: Mokume Gane

In many ways the "ultimate" noble metal that one might consider for jewelry isn't gold or platinum but their slightly tan colored cousin iridium. With the possible exception of osmium (which is smelly and toxic) it's the rarest non-radioactive element in the earth's crust -- several times more so than either gold or platinum. It's even more chemically incorruptible than the other two, it's heavier (17% denser than gold and 6% denser than platinum), and it's much more scratch-resistant. There's also the additional mystique that most if not all of the iridium we mine comes from meteorite impacts and is therefore extraterrestrial. Unfortunately no one has come up with a way to work with it economically, mainly due to its absurdly high melting point and its glassy brittleness. The first artisan to tame iridium will surely take the world by the tail.

But in the meantime there's a metalworking specialty that's just as interesting if not more so called mokume gane (mo-KOO-may GAH-nay) which involves bonding as many as thirty alternating layers of differently colored metals; twisting, stretching, or otherwise heavily deforming the resulting mass; and then carving it into rings and such that display a riotously swirling agate- or woodgrain-like surface. Japanese metalworker Denbei Shoami (1651-1728) invented mokume gane to make ornamental handles for samurai swords. Metals used include silver; gold and differing hues of it such as rose, white, and green; shakudo (an alloy of 96% copper and 4% gold that develops a blue-black patina); kuromi-do (copper with a smidgen of arsenic); shibuichi (a pink copper/silver alloy); and various alloys of titanium and tungsten that can involve iron, nickel and molybdenum. They sandwich these layers and heat them to a temperature, which chemists call a eutectic, that's hot enough to cause the atoms to jostle and intermingle at the layer boundaries yet not so great as to melt the stack into an undifferentiated blob.

It's unquestionably a high art and something not everyone can pull off. Currently the best known mokume gane master appears to be Norio Tamagawa, whose family has worked the field for nine generations. You can Google the term yourself to find some good sources, but one of the most visible and accomplished is clearly James Binnion at <a target="_new" href="http://www.mokume-gane.com/">http://www.mokume-gane.com</a>

<ul>

Robb Ksiazek is a successful author and publisher for <a target="_new" href="http://lingerie-4u.biz/">Lingerie-4U.biz</a>. He has researched and written hundreds of articles related to lingerie and swimwear trends and tips and believes getting the most out of fashion is empowering to the soul.

Five Must-Knows When Getting a Kanji Tattoo

Japanese tattoos are cool. But if a personal translator is out of your league how can you avoid becoming a kanji fashion victim and get stuck with a tattoo you will really regret?

1. Know the difference ? hiragana, katakana and kanji

Before you talk to your tattoo artist, make sure you know what you are talking about. You say you want a Japanese tattoo, but what do you know about Japanese characters? You need a quick stint in 2-minute Japanese boot camp.

First off, let's be clear that there is no Japanese &quot;alphabet&quot;. There are three sets of Japanese characters ? hiragana, katakana and kanji ? and each group has its own history, function and style. Get your head around these facts and you will already know more than 99% of the people walking around with Japanese tattoos right now:

Hiragana ? These simple, rounded characters represent sounds, but have no independent meaning. They were developed by women in the Heian period and are still considered feminine by Japanese people.

Katakana ? Developed by Buddhist monks around the same time as hiragana, these are simple, angular characters that also represent sounds and have no meaning of their own. You saw them cascading down the screen in Matrix (although they were backwards!)

Kanji ? Originally from China, these characters are like pictures, representing a meaning and also several different sounds depending on the situation.

Just reading this has probably given you an idea of which style you might like for your tattoo ? but don't stop just yet! Now you know what kinds of Japanese characters there are, let's move on to?

2. Writing styles

Come a bit closer. Lean forward towards the screen. That's right. Now, look at the words in front of you. Take a good, close look at the shapes of these letters. OK? Now tell me honestly: Would you want a tattoo in Times New Roman? How about Tahoma? What's that? You don't want a tattoo by Canon or Epson? Sure you don't. And in the same way, you don't want to have your Japanese tattoo looking like a printout either!

So, now we move on to writing styles. Just like there are three kinds of Japanese characters, there are also three ways they can be written. Don't worry. This is easy! I know, you are thinking that you can't even read Japanese, so how on earth will you be able to recognize these different styles? Well, try this:

Kaisho ? Block letters. You learned to write your ABCs like this, and Japanese kids learn to write their characters in just the same way: Like a Volvo ? boxy but good.

Gyousho ? Cursive letters. You moved up to middle school and learned you could write faster by letting the parts of some letters flow into the next. Yes, you guessed it - the Japanese do the same thing, and they call it gyousho.

Sousho ? Super-cursive letters. Ever seen a prescription from a doctor? Then you know what sousho is like in Japanese: Sure, the writer or some other trained person can (probably) read it, but no one else has a clue what it says!

Are you getting the picture? If you want to look like a computer printout, then be my guest and go for the kaisho style. That's your choice. But I think you probably want to use either gyousho or sousho for your tattoo. My personal preference would be gyousho: It's stylish, but it won't leave even native speakers baffled.

3. Real or fake?

Remember I mentioned Mel C at the beginning? Well guess what kanji she got tattooed on her arm? That's right ? &quot;Girl Power&quot;: Great in English, but show this kanji combination to most Japanese people and you'll get a blank look at best. Want a worse example? Try &quot;big daddy&quot;. Now, you know what it means in English, but put it into kanji and you end up with &quot;large father&quot;! It just doesn't work.

I'm sure you remember that kanji are the only characters that have meaning as well as sound. And their beauty means that they are what most people want for their tattoos. But watch out: As well as being popular, they can also be the most dangerous!

Let's see if we can find a pattern here: Look carefully at the examples above. What are they communicating - concrete concepts or abstract ideas? Can you see the difficulty the translators had? The kanji for &quot;dragon&quot;, &quot;samurai&quot;, &quot;love&quot; or any other concrete ideas are pretty easy to discover. But go for anything with an idiomatic meaning and whoever is trying to help you translate it is going to get a major headache!

Just an idea, but how about this suggestion: Rather than trying to force a round English peg into a square Japanese hole, why not find a real Japanese phrase that you like and get that instead? Bushidou (the Way of the Warrior) and Ninjutsu (The Art of Stealth) are two good examples of real Japanese terms that would make great tattoos.

4. Your name in Japanese

As I'm sure you remember from 2-minute Japanese boot camp, katakana are the characters usually used to write foreign words and names. So, if you want to get a tattoo of your name, technically these would be the characters you would choose. But I am guessing that, like most people, you want <a target="_new" href="http://www2.japanese-name-translation.com/jntshop/kanji_shop.html">your name written in kanji</a>.

Do a quick search on Google and you can find a number of sites that specialize in translating names into kanji. Basically there are two different methods that these sites use, so let's look at them here.

Translating the meaning

This method involves finding out the original meaning of the English name, and then researching the kanji equivalent.

For example, my name has its origins in Greek and means &quot;crowned one&quot;. The one who is crowned is the king, so I could translate my name into the kanji for king and call myself ohsama. (Perhaps a little pretentious ? and disturbingly similar to Mr. Bin Laden's first name!)

Translating the sound

This is a lot more difficult! Flick through a dictionary and you will find a bunch of kanji that can be combined to sound like your name. But sound isn't everything: Remember that kanji have meaning as well. In fact, it is even more complex than this! Be sure to check each of the following factors with anyone who translates your name like using this method:

1. Sound ? Does it sound like your name or not? I have seen my name &quot;translated&quot; on certain websites to sound like Stefan. Shame my name (Stephen) is actually said the same as Steven!

2. On-yomi and kun-yomi ? Yes, more technical words! But don't panic ? they are easy to understand: Basically, kanji have two kinds of reading. One kind, on-yomi, is their original Chinese sound. The other, kun-yomi, is their Japanese-only sound. What to watch is that (like oil and water) on-yomi and kun-yomi don't mix. Use either all on-yomi reading or all kun-yomi readings to make the sound of your name.

3. Meaning ? Do the kanji have a good meaning together? Now, it can be very difficult to find kanji that sound right and have a good meaning, so you may need to compromise a little on one of these.

4. Masculine or feminine ? I guess this is more like a sub-category of meaning, but it is something you need to check out to avoid embarrassment. For example, while &quot;Asian Beauty&quot; may be a great combination for a woman, I get the feeling most men would not be too happy about having that permanently written into their skin!

5. If in doubt, check!

First, use your new-found knowledge of Japanese to ask a few difficult questions to your tattoo artist or kanji &quot;specialist&quot;. If you get the feeling they don't know what they are talking about, you probably want to look elsewhere.

Next, before you get anything permanent done, use an online dictionary to check whether the Japanese really means what you want it to. You may not be able to input Japanese yourself, but you can copy and paste characters from an email or web page and see what they mean.

Finally, if you are lucky enough to know any, ask a Japanese person what they think. Their confused expression may tell you that you have come up with another &quot;big daddy&quot;!

Follow this advice and you will avoid the most dangerous pitfalls of Japanese tattoos and get a kanji tattoo you can be proud of.

Stephen Munday lives in Japan and is the creator of <a target="_new" href="http://www.japanese-name-translation.com/">http://www.japanese-name-translation.com/</a>, where you can download images of over 2,200 names in kanji or have a unique phrase translated into Japanese for a tattoo.
